Decor and hire
Did you have a previous career before you started your business?
I worked in the Home Office for 15 years. In all sorts of roles from law enforcement, to training, inspections and audits! Lots of admin, lots of managing , lots of living out of a suitcase and not exactly rewarding! I left in 2015 and started a wedding planning business which evolved into throwing workshops for couples on how to DIY your own wedding and about budgeting ! I then saw Doris Loves for sale in November last year – loved the company and thought it was the next natural step.
What year did you start your business?
January 2018 I became the owner of DL.
What motivated and inspired you to start your business?
I was in a fairly bad place in my last few years of being a civil servant and just needed to do something for myself. I had always worked extremely hard (some would say too hard) and I never even used to receive praise or thanks from peers or managers. I just had to get out.
I had always wanted to work for myself but just never had the guts to – its the best decision I have ever made! I work harder than ever but would not change it for the world!
What do you think were the 3 key steps you took to get everything going in the beginning?
Hard work – I don’t think I had any idea on how hard I would need to work.
Being patient – I tried to do too much in one go but soon learnt that small steps were much more effective.
Trusting my instincts – I have always second guessed myself but since being self employed I have stopped – we will all make mistakes but at least its me giving myself a kicking not someone else
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business, attracting new customers?
I’ve done some great wedding fairs – very friendly – not the hard sale at all. I think that has been one of the most effective ways. Deciding where your company sits within the industry.
What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?
Too many to mention ! I’m a do-er so just keep plugging away and have learnt from my mistakes.
If you could positively affect/change the wedding industry in one way what would it be?
The hard sale! do brides and grooms to be really want to be pounced upon. Being friendly, chatty and relaxed works in my opinion more effectively!
What do you think is the key to your credibility in the wedding industry?
Honesty! Is something goes wrong – own up to it and fix it !
What do you wish you had known before you started this business?
Nothing – I’ve enjoyed the journey.
Can you tell us about any habits you have/things you do, which set up success every day?
