What is your name
What is the name of your business?
Judith Searles Flowers
What town are you based in?
What is your speciality, service type?
Did you have a previous career before you started your business?
My creative skills were put to good use as a sales designer for Poggenpohl, a high end kitchen manufacturer from Germany, where I worked across London for 20 years before moving to Hampshire.
What year did you start your business?
What motivated and inspired you to start your business?
My hobby became a passion and after being asked to complete a wedding for a friends daughter it slowly grew to the size it is today with admin assistants a team of florists and well over 50 weddings a year!
What do you think were the 3 key steps you took to get everything going in the beginning?
To become established I worked hard in the beginning to find a good supplier, on ensuring we provided excellent service and networking with everyone I possibly could!
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business, attracting new customers?
Personal recommendation has been my most effective way but social media, mainly Instagram is now catching up!
What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?
Cash flow is always a challenge! We also regularly work through every weekend, either producing a weekend or meeting new couples. The wedding industry has a 7 day a week demand on your time.
If you could positively affect/change the wedding industry in one way what would it be?
I’d love to spend less time feeling isolated, we are great team players on the day but spend such a lot of time in our cold workshop/fridge. It’s hard not to pine for more human contact!
What do you think is the key to your credibility in the wedding industry?
Over very personal and dedicated delivery! Simple, faultless quality and a personal service.
What do you wish you had known before you started this business?
How you never get a day off!
Can you tell us about any habits you have/things you do, which set up success every day?
I count and recount flowers stems arrangements and keep organised ….it’s essential.
The most courageous thing i’ve ever done as an entrepreneur is…
Dressing the hippodrome casino for their Christmas parties! Brave, arduous and a massive project every time… A wonderful London market for a country florist
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Own a cake shop!
My favourite business tool/resource/book/podcast is…
The flower book it is an app which shows us the availability of flowers in the Dutch markets in colour coded “live” mode it’s a life changer!
My favourite quote is…
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?
If you could pick anyone, who would you most like to have dinner with?
What are your non-work habits that help you with your work-life balance?
There is only work ! But watching Poldark helps to end a Sunday evening…..I sail, where I love hog the helm (apparently I am quite bossy!) and I love a good ski trip when time allows…. I’ve just started to learn to salsa dance!
What were you doing the last time you looked at a clock and realised you had lost all track of time?
At a party…..chatting about sailing!
Describe yourself in one word
What movie, no matter how many times you’ve seen it, do you have to watch when it’s on?
How to delegate
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
I’m a good sales person and could help with sales systems
What single piece of advice would you give a newly engaged couple?
Don’t stress over the small stuff and enjoy the preparation….
The best piece of advice i’ve ever been given is…
Take one step at a time and one day at a time… and if that feels like too much stand still for a while!
