Liz from CakeBuds

My name is Liz and I’m the Cake Designer and Maker behind CakeBuds. I set up CakeBuds in summer 2017 after making my daughters 1st birthday cake. I quickly expanded my cake business into wedding cakes which has led to many exciting opportunities such as styled photoshoots, becoming a recommended wedding supplier for several wedding venues across the south of England and winning the title of South Central Wedding Cake Designer/Maker of the year in The 2019 Wedding Industry Awards.

It was not until the end of 2018 that I truly started to feel like I had found my own style in cake design. I was finding that more and more couples were breaking boundaries when it came to planning their weddings. Everyone is trying to be different in one way or another. I soon realised that I too was being drawn to cakes which were a little different to the traditional wedding cake. Whether the cakes were minimalist, highly detailed, bold or modest, they all had a creative flair to them which made them stand out. That is when I started to experiment with different textures and soon realised that I had a real passion for Contemporary Cake Design.

There is so much choice nowadays when it comes to designing your wedding cake that it may seem like a daunting task. Long gone are the days of the traditional white wedding cake as more and more couples are pushing the boundaries and opting for something a little bit different. Whether your looking for something that is colourful or neutral, bold or modest, detailed or minimalistic, I will work with you every step of the way to ensure your wedding cake is individually designed to suit your particular style, ultimately creating a centrepiece that is both stunning and delicious.

Tell us what makes your business special.

Moving away from the conventional practice of cake decorating, my passion lies within contemporary cake design. I love exploring different textures, playing around with colour and creating different shaped cakes. I find inspiration all around me and my mind is conditioned to see cake everywhere. Sometimes ideas just come to me, often emerging as I experiment. Other times inspiration is taken from fashion, floristry, interior design, graphic design, paintings to name a few.

Why do your customers fall in love with you?

Couples come to me because they want something a little bit different for their wedding cake. When we first meet at a consultation I love to get to know them and hear all about their wedding plans, what they do and don’t like in terms of the design for their wedding cake. This enables me to draw up a few cake designs for them which are completely bespoke, unique and will reflect their wedding day. As I truly believe my couples wedding cake is all about them. I’ll then work with my couples until they are completely happy with the design and take the pressure off them by liaising with the venue in regards to delivery and set up of their wedding cake.

“What a cake! Liz created the most beautiful wedding cake for our winter wedding. She really listened to our thoughts when we first met and designed a really unique cake with so much texture and a look that really felt like us. Not to mention it tasted amazing! The design process to the finished product was so cool to see because she really stayed true to the vision she had. Everyone also said that the cake was simply stunning! Thank you so much – you are incredibly talented!! x”
